Gonna try and give the DJ'ing a big push next year and once I get the digital set up sorted then I'm all ready with my Soundcloud page to get some brand spanking mixes on to promote myself. I've a bit of a master plan, fingers crossed! Anyhoo, here's a fairly old mix I did for an Halloween party - remember it having some cool Mylo tunes on it, I should really listen to these prior to posting them!

Another re-upload and a classic to boot! What's even nicer to know is that Krafty Kuts links directly to this blog from his Soundcloud page. m4a files only (sorry!)

This is one of my favourite mixes, even more amazing was that it was plastered on the front of the December 2001 issue of Mixmag. The magazine (apparantly) sold like absolute hotcakes, and is quite a sought after CD, up there with Coldcuts Journeys by DJs and Andy Smith’s The Document. “It’s kinda about being clever,” he says, “in general, thinking about what people are going to like. That’s the hard thing, trying to choose a collection of records that make people think ‘these work well’. And I think I’ve done that in the past” he says without a hint of ego, “and people have come to expect the unexpected with me, and they think ‘I wouldn’t have done that, that’s a good idea’, and that’s what I try to do.”

Free cassette with December 17, 1994 issue of New Musical Express. Mixed by The Chemical Brothers when they were known as The Dust Brothers.
The end track is actually preceded by 30 seconds of the Dust Brothers / Chemical Brothers / Sunday Social remix of 'La Tristesse Durera'.
Used to give this some battering on me walkman, when I came to put it on it started off really fast, then really warped, then played fine! Check it out...

Here's a band that I kinda started liking until they released that Cash Machine track and they went down in my estimation! Despite that, this mix by their tour DJ WrongTom has a eclectic mix of indie, house, reggae and hip-hop - something that I wouldn't necessarily identify with their style of music. Their new album seems to be causing a fuss all over their choice of artwork (or lack of it), it stinks of laziness to me instead of being the new "White Album". Given away with the October 2004 edition of Mixmag, this "15 track mix of classic remixes and monster anthems" has a couple of interesting cover versions at the start and ends with a side project of Stuart Price's (Les Rythmes Digitales/Zoot Woman) on Kitsuné.

How New York can you get? Based in the epicentre of the coolest spot in NYC, Armand lives in a studio/lounge set-up overlooking the city. The skyline itself is impressive enough, but it's even more inspiring when you realise that it's the loft where songs like "I Can Smell U" and "Witch Doktor" were spawned.

Sorry about the lack of posting over the last few days, been making most of the weekend and the weather! Went to see Lottie at Plug (if you were there I was the one with the hat on! I was looking after it for a mate, honest!) & Little John's grave at Hathersage! So, in a totally unrelated mix (cos I can't be arsed to go up to the "library" and choose anything & this is downstairs...) here's an new to old school mix given away with Muzik back in September 2002.

Nigel Dawson is a DJ known for his definitive house sets varying from the deeper and subtle music to the full on progressive and has built a solid reputation working with the likes of Cream, Ministry of Sound and, of course, Renaissance.

In 1992 Renaissance was in it's infancy. Residents were Sasha and Digweed esteemed company to say the least, making it one of the hardest stages on which to make an impression, but impress Nigel did and it forged his own residence which has survived to this day.

The scenario is familiar guest DJ fails to show, young and unknown there is Nigel on hand willing to fill in, young DJ rocks it, consequently, young DJ goes onto glittering DJ and production career. However familiar this scenario is it rarely, if ever happens, but in Nigel Dawson's case it is.

Along the way this talent and penchant for hard work has established him as a regular on the UK club circuit this includes The Tunnel, The Pod, Lush, Slinky to name but a few. He has become the cornerstone of the long running successful night at The Cross in London as sole resident but also can be found playing at Media in Nottingham to his and their home crowd on a regular basis.

If that weren't enough he also guests at many of the clubs in the UK and Worldwide and as a result Nigel is now established an impeccable global reputation. International dates include : Australia, South Africa, USA, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ibiza, Canada, Russia, China, Amsterdam Luxemburg, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Belgium. Following months this is to expand further to Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Finland and France.

In 1996 Nigel made the logical progression into studio production. From this his pseudonym "Dominion" was born and his first track soon found a home on Whoop Records. Entitled " The Gate ", it was an instant success with the progressive mafia and was included on the Renaissance four compilation featuring Dave Seaman and lan Ossia. Classics being the operative word with this excellent mix given away with Mixmag back in June 2005.
As a producer Morillo has been responsible for a bewildering array of tracks, under pseudonyms that include Ministers De la Funk, The Dronez (a project alongside Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero and Jose Nunez, which won the trio the remixer of the year award in 2001), RAW, Smooth Touch, RBM, Deep Soul, Club Ultimate and Li'l Mo Ying Yangamongst others. As a DJ, he's played the world over and from his legendary Subliminal Session parties at Pacha in Ibiza, to his roadblock events at the Crobar in Miami, Erick approaches everything he does with an unrivaled work hard/play hard mentality. "I'm a workaholic," he admits. "Sometimes I'll be in the studio 24/7 - but when it comes to enjoying myself I can keep up with the best of them. At Radio 1's party in Miami this year I was standing on top of the bar, two Tequila bottles in my hands just pouring it into clubbers' mouths. That was a good night!" Raised in Colombia, then New Jersey, Erick was weaned on a musical diet of Latin rhythms, reggae, and hip hop. Having started DJing at the age of 11 and securing himself several gigs playing friends and families' weddings, he decided to take a studio engineering course at the local Center of Media Arts. He was soon inducted into the house fraternity through his friend Marc Anthony (the Salsa King), while he was working with Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez on "Ride On The Rhythm". "Louie's kinda watched out for me since the beginning," smiles Erick. "He never really told me how I should do things, he's just always been supportive." After somehow scraping together enough equipment for a studio, the young Morillo tentatively approached labels such as Nervous and Strictly Rhythm with his fledgling productions. He was rewarded with little more than a string of rejections. It was only when he presented Strictly with a track called "The New Anthem", under the moniker Reel 2 Reel, that they began to really sit up and take notice. After signing 'The New Anthem' Erick quickly followed it with the classic "I Like To Move It," a track that set up camp in the pop charts throughout the world, going platinum in Holland and gold in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium in Australia - giving the young producer his first taste of touring in Europe.Flush with success, but determined to keep his head and music firmly in the underground ("It's where I come from, where I always go back to") he notched up a pair of Billboard #1's with Smooth Touch's "In My House" and his sublime collaboration with buddy Louie Vega, Li'l Mo' Ying Yang's "Reach." In 1997 Morillo launched Subliminal Records with his production partners Harry Romero and Jose Nunez, after spending almost a year meticulously planning everything from logos to packaging, making sure that even the smallest details of the look, feel, and function of the label were to his satisfaction. Guided by Morillo's ear and studio presence, and bolstered by his equally able teammates, the Subliminal brand has gone on to become synonymous with a funky, soulful sound that's as underground as it is party-ready. "I wanted to create a label that was known for quality music," explains Erick. "I wanted people to be able to go into a store, buy a Subliminal track and know that they've got a quality record." Seven years later and Subliminal has over 100 releases under its belt, ranging from full-on radio smashes like Who Da Funk's "Shiny Disco Balls" to underground classics like Ministers de la Funk "Believe". It was voted Best Label at the Muzik Awards in both 1999 and 2000, that's not to mention the indispensable Subliminal Sessions compilation series, which showcase the label's developing artists and sound, or the label's imprints Sondos, Subliminal Soul, Bambossa and SUBUSA, which cater for everything from tough, tribal beats to rock-house cocktails.

Does what it says on the tin - had a bloody nightmare trying to post this (2nd time lucky!), lets hope things only get messier for the better! Given away free with the August 2002 issue of Ministry magazine.
Brandon Block and Alex P are legends in clubland. Notorious for their substance intake, famed for their antics and even occasionally enjoyed for their DJing, it’s no surprise that they jointly won last year’s Muzik magazine award for Caner Of The Year. Of the two, Brandon Block seems most willing to push his luck – he’d already won the Muzik award twice - but Alex P can certainly hold his own in the hedonism stakes. They first met in the late eighties at Haven Stables in Ealing, where Block had a residency. They didn’t see each other again until 1991 when, the story goes, Alex stole a bus from outside Pacha in Ibiza and, off his face, drove it to San Antonio where he turn up at the door of Block’s apartment. Soon after, the two set up an impromptu party on the terrace – then used as the cloakroom - of the Space club. The terrace at Space has since become part of the fabric of Ibiza, much like Block and P themselves. Since then they’ve always been something of a double act, although they DJ individually just as much as they do together. They released a record as Pee Zee & Blocko called Release Yourself on the shortlived Two's Company label and together have amassed a bizarre catalogue of remixes, including Mandy Smith’s Just Can't Wait and rap group Black Sheep’s North, South, East, West. Then there’s the Friday night show on Kiss 100 FM, Peeze and Blocko's House, and the joint Ibiza residencies at pretty much every venue on the island over the years. As DJs, they’re no purists and will play anything that works on the dancefloor, which usually means full-on party anthems from the word go.

It's been hot. Damn hot. Therefore too hot to blog, hence a lack of activity over the last few days (plus I've been working loads & still am). So, here's the Summer Sound of Subliminal from the September 2000 issue of Muzik.

Born in Florida USA, Richard Fite started his career in house music at the age of 13. He started out spinning throughout Florida, but went to Los Angeles CA after some while. He started doing mix-shows on KGGI 99.7FM, which turned into a popular show. Though Richard experimented with Techno, Progressive and Breaks in the early '90's, he stayed true to house. After a few guest dj appearances on Californian radio shows he found himself instrumental to the growing club (house) scene in souther California. From this point on he evolved into a producer and remixer, as well as being a DJ.

Mixmag Live burst into life in 1991. Back then, market stalls and independent dance shops across the country were meeting the demand for DJ mix tapes - bootlegs to you and me, pal. Entrepreneurial types with access to a DAT machine and the spare output from the DJ's mixer were churning them out like nobody's business. We've all got one or two in our collection somewhere and let's face it, apart from the sound quality some of them were pretty good. They at least helped to explain to our still unenlightened friends just exactly what we were banging on about when we talked of DJs in revered terms. As artists.
The problem was of course, was that the artists weren't getting paid. The DJ often didn't know that he or she was being recorded. The record producers didn't even get credited on the badly photocopied cassette inlay, let alone get any dosh. And the punters were buying some very lo-fi recordings on rusty-looking tapes that always seemed to chew up in your car stereo half-way through your favourite breakdown.
So we did something about it. Dave Seaman and Carl Cox put together two sparkling mixes for "Mixmag Live Volume 1". Everyone got paid, the DJs, the producers, the songwriters. And the people who bought the first tape, mail order from this magazine's erstwhile HQ in Slough, were buying a bit of history. It was the worlds first ever legal DJ mix compilation. It didn't screw up your dad's hi-fi. You could finally read the name of the artist who had made that tune you'd been trying to hum to bewildered shop assistants for two months. And it had something in common with every subsequent volume of Mixmag Live since: it fucking rocked.

Some definite "essentials" in this mix by Touché, given away with Muzik magazine back in May 2000.
UK hip-hop and big beat outfit the Wiseguys started as a duo, but is now one man, Touché, aka Theo Keating. Hip-hop obsessives, Touché and Regal met while at college in Clerkenwell, London. Regal was working with the Direct Current MCs and Touché joined through a mutual friend. They released an independent single, "Keep In Step" in 1990 and began to assemble primitive pieces from the breakbeat tracks they had collected, using record decks and a tape recorder. In 1992, Regal and Touché began to work on tracks for Solo E, who was managed by Rene Gelston, head of the Blackmarket International label. Gelston liked what he heard and asked them to record for the label. In 1994, as the Wiseguys, they released the EP Ladies Say Ow!. It received support from high profile DJs on London's booming acid jazz/hip-hop scene, such as Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge. The newly-formed label, Wall Of Sound licensed "The Real Vibes' for its first Give "Em Enough Dope compilation, and released the double a-side, "Nil By Mouth"/"Too Easy', in April 1995. An old friend of Touché's, New York City-based rapper, Sense Live, provided rhymes for the Wiseguys" second album The Antidote, released in August 1998.
Touché is a popular DJ on the big beat scene in Europe, usually working as part of the Wall Of Sound collective of DJs/artists. He has also supported labelmates Propellerheads on tour, and enjoyed commercial success in May 1999 with the UK number 2 single "Ooh La La". The song originally peaked outside the Top 50 in summer 1998, but was picked up second time around thanks to its extensive use in a television advertisement for Budweiser lager.

In the final weeks of Jockey Slut, the editorial team were frantically looking to new methods of attracting readers. Their brainstorming was relentless, but so often they were taking the right approach. Their aim was to strategically link the magazine to the website and vice-versa. One was only half of the full picture. Live streaming on the site, but accessible via codes found in the magazine, and no duplication of magazine content on the site. Sure, they were making readers go out and buy the physical Jockey Slut, but still they were exploring the web as a new medium - taking it slowly, and building towards a coherent, accessible, communal site that would have enabled them to eventually phase out the magazine and it’s high overheads. Sadly for the Jockey Slut team, they were not given enough time to implement their ideas fully.

Allister Whitehead began his DJing career way back in 1987 at the tender age of 17 - no surprise unconventional. Starting out in his hometown of Nottingham, Allister took up a residency at the Koolkat, where he often played next to the ubiquitous Graeme Park on Saturday nights. His growing reputation quickly led to another residency, at the seminal club Venus, but the biggest break came when he covered a spot at the Hacienda, standing in for Mike Pickering of M People. On the strength of this one night alone, he began his third residency. So now the story of our new Qaraj'ic master begins to unfold in earnest...

He achieved cult status at the Golden (he was actually the first guest DJ they had ever booked), which was voted cub of the year in 1993. Yet another residency swiftly followed, at Cream, where Allister found his largest following yet. His national status was further cemented with regular spots at Ministry of Sound, Gatecrasher, and just about every club in between. Having proved his worth as a premier league DJ the time came for Allister to develop the Zero-G club in Nottingham. Regular crowds of 1500+ were attracted, as his Saturday nights were exclusive to this baby...his demand to play at other clubs the length and breadth of the country was of course, a natural consequence.

He was truly established as a household name worldwide with the Gold selling Fantazia album 'The House Collection 3' which was then, the biggest selling DJ compilation ever. The floodgates then opened to a new era of compilation sales becoming a dominating component of the dance music industry. Allister has since gone on to achieve 3 more Gold and 2 Silver albums with compilation for Fantazia and Ministry of Sound.

Nowadays Allister is undisputedly one of the UK's most prolific House DJs. He can be seen in the UK's most respected clubs, like Shindig in Newcastle, Lovezoo in Nottingham, The Zap in Brighton and Cream events, which regularly boasts the country's highest attendance figures. Committed to a punishing schedule, he has been known to travel to up to four countries in one week. He's travelling further a field than ever before, working in some of the finest clubs in the world in America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Most DJs fall into club-life by accident due to their love of music. Not Dave Seaman. He decided he wanted to become a DJ when he was eight years old – and Played his first gig at 12. All his DJ dreams have long since come true, but he’s never lost his enthusiasm or his creative drive. Seaman has headlined clubs on every continent – he is one of the UK’s most travelled, most creative, and most celebrated DJs in the world. In Japan he was photocopied in a life-sized Xerox for a Levi’s advert; in Australia he presented an episode of the BBC’s Choice World Clubbing programme and was later profiled for Channel 4’s 4DJ series. His Global Underground mix albums have come from Melbourne, Cape Town and Buenos Aires.

He’s DJed for a Stella McCartney birthday party, got drunk with Robbie Williams, and lived in New York. As half of Brothers In Rhythm, he produced for Kylie Minogue & the Pet Shop Boys, remixed U2, Michael Jackson and Dido. He was the defining first editor of Mixmag and a resident DJ at Shelley’s, the legendary acid house club that launched the career of Sasha. He was there at the beginning of the British dance music revolution and he’s still one of its leading proponents today, his contagious enthusiasm unabated despite this glittering career.

Today Dave Seaman is more energized than ever - because he recognizes that British dance music, having gone back to its underground roots after a period of upheaval, is entering a renaissance. Outside of the mainstream, away from the UK’s transient pop-culture fashions, cool new scenes are forming in cities all over the UK. “We’re entering a new phase. Dance music in the UK needed to implode - the great acid house detox,” Seaman says. “We shed all the dead wood and hangers on. I feel like I’m starting again almost. It’s very exciting.”

As promised (& requested!), the third part of the London Xpress CD, a laid back electronic mix by DJ Harvey.

Harvey's long involvement in and love of music began at the tender age of 13 when he and two older friends formed a new wave band called 'Ersatz' (Cheap Substitute) who recorded their first track in 1978. By 1981 he had moved on to a new band imaginatively titled 'Your Dinner' which harvey describes as having a madness vibe with more satirical lyrics! He also at this time set up a label called 'Leisure Sounds' to release their material as well as offerings from the other aspiring bands they were collaborating.

This early involvement with music burgeoned through his love of drums into experimenting with breakbeats and tired & disillusioned with the live music scene, he began to himself in his growing collection of old Disco and Hip-Hop.

His first major break as a D.J. came with his sets at 'Wet' where he played alongside Breeze and Ian B (Eon). It was a mixed club that allowed them to experiment with the crowd by combining a wide variety of musical styles as well as slipping in the odd bit of poetry!

By the mid 80's Harvey teamed up with some friend from Cambridge to form the legendary 'Tonka' Sound System. From their early warehouse parties to the infamous monthly monday night jams at the Zap in Brighton. Harvey, Choci & Rev treated Tonka's huge following to a rare blend of Hip-Hop, Reggae, Electro, Classics and smatterings of House in the latter days.

House music was now an integral part of Harvey's set and more D.J's were supporting this exciting new phenomenon. Harvey found himself at numerous warehouse parties including the notorious 'Freedom' events alongside the likes of Paul 'Trouble' Anderson, Norman Jay, Judge Jules and Danny Rampling. The parties created headline news, flying revellers to Amsterdam for mad weekends and taking over huge warehouses for parties that would carry on well into the next day. It was at this time that the organizer of these parties , Kevin Simpson became good friends with Harvey, and when Freedom came to and end they would go on to have a fruitful relationship with future projects.

Stafford based Dean Meredith and Andy Meecham have their history firmly planted in pioneering music. As Bizarre Inc the boys defined early acid house and rave culture (and cemented it’s crossover potential with 3 UK top ten hits) and as Chicken Lips they have been the catalyst for the now well established punk-funk, nu-disco and electro-house scenes.

Signing to Kingsize Records in 1999, the home of Andy Meecham’s Sir Drew alias since the demise of Acid Jazz offshoot Athletico in the mid ‘90’s (where Meredith had also been recordings his Psychedelia Smith material) the lads were reunited and Chicken Lips was born.

EPs entitled “Big Legs”, “Git Back” and “Shoe Beast” not only displayed the guys irreverent sense of humour but also their love for the combination of live and electronic sounds. These releases found favour with everyone from Pete Tong to James Lavelle and set the Chicken Lips stall out perfectly before the release of their debut LP, “Echoman”, in 2000.

The second studio album, “Extended Play”, followed in 2002 and yet again marked out the boys as innovators with it’s rich combination of disco and dub vibes sounding like nothing else around at the time. In between these two albums, the singles kept coming and one, “He Not In”, managed to blow out of control and slowly become an anthem courtesy of support by a massive range of DJs. It’s NY Electro-Disco stylings, huge riff and swaggering beats are widely credited as the catalyst for the ‘80’s electro revival. The track also broke out of the underground and onto our screens as it became the soundtrack to a very successful Smirnoff Vodka advertising campaign.

Bit of an Ibiza special this weekend as I can't be arsed doing much & just want to chill out! This CD given away with the June 1999 issue of Ministry Magazine has on it the cream of the chill out genre, including the essential "Les Nuits" by Nightmares On Wax alongside a rare remix by Groove Armada!

A Man Called Adam was originally founded as a jazz band, led by Sally Rodgers, Steve Jones, and Paul Daley (later to form Leftfield). Signed to the pioneering Acid Jazz Records enabled the group to find more gigs, and debut with a pair of singles. These early recordings, "A.P.B." and "Earthly Powers," reflected more recent influences -- namely the acid-house explosion which had rocked British clubs and charts during the late '80s. Winnowed down to a threesome of Rodgers/Jones/Daley, A Man Called Adam signed to Big Life in 1990 and just missed the British Top 40 that year with "Barefoot in the Head." After Daley left the fold, Rodgers and Jones followed with their first LP, The Apple. Unhappy with their treatment by Big Life (a sentiment echoed by the Orb at the same time), Rodgers and Jones decided to form their own label, Other Records, with design artist and longtime friend Steve "Jaffa" Gribbin.

Perhaps due to their new interests in label management, Rodgers and Jones didn't release much A Man Called Adam material during the mid-'90s. (They did have some input on the Fear of Flying LP released by Other act Sensory Productions, and released singles on Other as Beachflea). By the end of the decade, the brand of uptempo yet slightly melancholy jazz-house pioneered by the duo became incredibly popular as a soundtrack for British club-kids vacationing in the dancefloor paradise known as Ibiza. The singles "Easter Song," "Estelle," and "All My Favourite People (Stay with Me)" became Ibiza anthems, and A Man Called Adam made appearances on many club compilations. The pair's second album, Duende, finally appeared in 1998

Went to see Plump DJs on Friday, chilled out then went up to a house in the country on Saturday, got steaming drunk at a wedding on Sunday (along with impromptu sing-a-long in a bar after), drove back Monday & went to see a mates band then put up a bed yesterday! Was never keen on MJ Cole when he hit the charts but I found his album in a charity shop & it's got some excellent breaks tracks on it. Which leads us onto this mix which was given away with Muzik back in May 2003, including one of my favourite tracks "Under Me Sleng Teng".
The word quality and MJ Cole have run hand in hand right from the start of his diverse and inspirational career. To the casual observer and mainstream music fan MJ Cole is the producer behind five UK top 40 singles (including the top ten hit Crazy Love), the albums Sincere (his groundbreaking debut) and Cut To The Chase, plus a Mercury nomination and MOBO Best Producer award. His profile and talents as a producer, remixer and arranger have lead him to work with some of the worlds biggest artists such as Tom Jones and Mariah Carey. To the dedicated clubber and dance music follower, MJ Cole is a true pioneer of the UK Garage scene - an urban legend no less, who retains a deep respect on the ever-discerning underground. Never one to be pigeonholed, Matt has ploughed an unusually wide and all-encompassing professional path. His student days studying classical music at LCU and the Royal College contrasted with his nights raving to hardcore and jungle at Telepathy and Raindance. In that same sprit he has gone on to draw together skills as a studio engineer with string arranging; song writing with DJing; and the sophistication of classical composition with the raw energy of bass-powered sound systems. He is a definitive sound artist, who is just as at home honing beats with hip hop head Rodney P as he is collaborating with renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Its this open minded love of multifaceted music that underpins Prolific Recordings. DJ Touché - Ministry Presents...B-Boy 2000

1st part of the B-Boy 2000 CD mixed by DJ Touché & given away with the September 1999 issue of Ministry Magazine. Touché is London-based DJ/producer Theo Keating. Currently resident at Brighton's long-running Boutique night, and at The Culture Club in Ghent, Belgium, Theo's DJ-ing takes him around the world. He also records for the Southern Fried label, and runs his own label, Body Clap.

But it all started with The Wiseguys. Formed in 1994 by Touché and Regal, and signed to Wall Of Sound, The Wiseguys released their debut LP ‘Executive Suite’ in 1996. It received critical acclaim, and is now accepted as a cult classic. However, Regal soon departed, and Touché went on to record the follow-up album ‘The Antidote’ solo. It was this album that gave rise to the hit singles ‘Ooh La La’ (#2 in the UK Top 40) and ‘Start The Commotion’ (Billboard Top 10 in the US), and led to Touché remixing artists such as Beck, The Offspring and Gorillaz. But wanting to leave The Wiseguys on a high, Theo decided to finish with the project in 2000, and concentrate on his work as Touché...

A long stint DJ-ing at Fabric followed, and a mix album for the renowned Journeys By DJ series, as well as his own radio shows: on Atlantic 252, and as co-host on XfM's All-City Show. It was during this period that Touché fit in releases for respected labels Subliminal, Heat, and Junior. However, it was Fatboy Slim's Southern Fried Records where Theo finally found a home.

Not exactly given away but included on the Zen TV DVD, sorry guys but if I'm going to put a DVD on I'm gonna watch it, not just listen! Plus the speakers for my ipod are so much better than the TV speakers...

The ZenTV DVD has twice the capacity of a normal DVD, containing as it does 35 promo videos from the label, a fifteen minute audiovisual mix and a 30 minutes audio mix from Hexstatic. And as if that wasn't enough, the DVD has a state-of-the-art menu system which means you can watch the videos either in the order we intended, randomly, or chronologically from the oldest to the newest or the newest to the oldest. You can also look up any specific act and check out their videos and album art. Or just leave a gallery of some of Ninja's finest covers running in the corner of the room as a kind of ambient art installation dahlink Mwah.

But that just scratches the surface, really, cos after all, in the kingdom of the blind content is king. Or something like that. You know the music is going to be good (we hope you know the music is going to be good), but what about the visuals?

Well, one advantage with not having hit records (Coldcut's "Beats & Pieces" remains our one top forty for 12 years work) is that you don't have to worry about getting your promos shown on daytime MTV or TOTP or any of those hellholes of visual mediocrity where all the bands have to look fabulous and if they don't, well you better make sure you put some models in there who do So instead, you can be (whisper it) creative.

Which is why some of the top up-and-coming names in video direction and animation have worked for Ninja in the last few years. Because they know that if they pitch an interesting, visually striking, innovative idea, they will be left to get on with it without interference. Established directors like Alexander Rutterford (Amon Tobin, now working for Radiohead) Sam Arthur (DJ Vadim) as well as young turks like Conkerko (Bonobo). Fizzy Eye made their first music video for Wagon Christ (the truly excellent "Receiver") and have since gone on to do commercials for Honda, proving that a track record with Ninja doesn't ruin your business prospects.

Beyond this, artists like Kid Koala and Jaga Jazzist often even commission their own videos, working with close associates to find the perfect match between their sound and the director's vision. As if that wasn't enough, there are artists on the label who are intimately involved in the creation of their own videos, whether it's the Scruff cartoons that make up the basis of his Cosgrove Hall-animated "Sweet Smoke," the pioneering audiovisual cut-ups of Hexstatic and Coldcut, Funki Porcini's satires of adverts or his weird, otherworldly concrete moving abstracts.

Overall, since those early audiovisual mash-ups, the driving force behind all of Ninja's visual work has been that the video is not merely an unrelated promo item to sell a single but should be intimately related to the sounds it represents. The budgets may be small, some results may be more effective than others, but there's no denying that the attempts to realise this ideal are never less than interesting.

Picking the tracks for this CD was a nightmare. I had to condense 11 years of late nights and early mornings, lucky breaks and hard work into 74 minutes of music. But I think it's come out pretty well. There's a nod to the originators with Sagat's still fresh-sounding "Luvstuff" and Orbital bookending the whole thing. There are classic remixes from Armand Van Helden, Sasha, Roger Sanchez and Breeder. But most of all there are big, big tunes from System F, DJ Misjah, Sex-O-Sonique, JDS and Mighty Dub Katz. I hope it gives you a taste of what ffrr has been about for the last 11 years.
If you know these tunes, I hope it brings you as many good memories as I had when putting it together. If it doesn't, well thanks for looking through our closet. We've had a ball.

According to the sleeve notes 1991 was a watershed year in the world of dance music. It was the year that UK dance music really found its feet & wrestled initiative away from the previously all-conquering Americans. Bands like The Shamen, Renegade Soundwave, Leftfield, Orbital & Prodigy proved that the British could rave bigger & better than anyone else & hundreds of thousands flocked to huge outdoor events to 'ave it right off in the sunshine. Given away with the August 2002 issue of Muzik. This is one hell of a mix, Miss Kittin singing over a few of the tracks, covering such a broad range of styles and throwing in a couple of essential old school classics as well!
Miss Kittin (real name Caroline Hervé) is an electronica vocalist and DJ. She was born in Grenoble, France in 1973. At age 22 she began DJing, spinning records in France, Moscow and Chicago with Mike Dearborn. Soon after she met DJ Hell in Marseille who wanted her to record for his International DeeJay Gigolos label. She presented him with the EP Champagne that she recorded with The Hacker. Miss Kittin & The Hacker released First Album in 2001. Several tracks, such as "1982" and "Frank Sinatra", became anthems of the electroclash scene.

Kittin expressed an interest in the visual arts - she studied both contemporary and graphic arts. As time progressed, however, Kittin found herself emulating her parents' musical tastes by developing an interest in musical genres ranging from classic, jazz, funk & disco to English Pop. Finding her niche in Electronic Music in 1991, Kittin raved all around the country before doing her first mix in April of 1993. Her first set came one year later in 1994, at which time she started her career with Tekmics Booking Agency, playing in the famous Dragon Ball wild parties of Southern France.

In pursuit of other opportunities, Kittin left France in 1996 and relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, where she would join the Mental Groove Record Posse one year later. Through years of an exciting and mobile career as a DJ, Miss Kittin is confident with her own personal sound. She states, "I get quickly bored when I listen to the same sound. DJs have to take risks, without only thinking about what people want to hear. Some people say I'm too technical. That's true, but this technique also gives me the freedom to concentrate only on music."

She has become one of the most important figures in electroclash, working with Felix da Housecat, Chicks on Speed, and Golden Boy.

Every so often, reference is made to dance being dead, or rock being healthy, or vice versa. It implies the two things have an inverse relationship; that they can’t co-exist. It’s a load of old nonsense, as the work of Andrew Weatherall serves to prove. A cursory glance at his discography – featuring Creation, Heavenly, Factory, Rough Trade, One Little Indian, Warner, Talkin’ Loud, Island, Boy’s Own, Deconstruction, Warp, Rotters’ Golf Club etc – undermines the cliché further. Or put another way: trends don’t sell records, artists do. Andrew Weatherall lives his life in small print, not bold text, always supporting the independents, and ever ready to back the underdog. He cares for fashion but not what is fashionable. Nothing about him is painstakingly planned, or coolly calculated.

The Big Beat Boutique (later renamed The Boutique) kickstarted the so-called "Big Beat" genre along with The Heavenly Social with such names as The Chemical Brothers & Fatboy Slim. It doesn't appear that The Boutique is still going, their website is none existent, anyone else the wiser???

Graeme Park - We Love The Haçienda

Given away with Ministry Magazine's May 2002 issue, I did have the chance to go to the Haçienda once but it would have meant sneaking in as I didn't have a ticket, my mate did but I was too scared & stopped in the pub in Sheffield instead! In 1986, it became one of the first clubs outside the US to start playing house music, with DJs Mike Pickering and Little Martin (later with Graeme Park) hosting the Nude night on Fridays. This night quickly became legendary, and helped to turn around the reputation and fortunes of the Haçienda, which went from making a consistent loss to being full every night of the week by early 1987.This 45 minute mix does contain some classic & obscure old school tracks (it isn't the same Stardust that contained Thomas Bangalter and Alan Braxe though!), please note that this mix is not officially endorsed by the Haçienda club (as stated on the CD's back cover!)

Free 3" CD given away with The Face back in June 2001, the other track on the CD being "Get Me Off" from the album "Rooty". Instead of banging on about how great Basement Jaxx are (which they are folks!), I'm so sad that The Face is not with us, there has not been a magazine to fill the void since it ended. So many stories, the Jason Donovan libel suit where he won & paid the money back to the magazine so it didn't fold, having images censored in Singapore with big stickers on the pages, it folded because of poor sales, however wikipedia states that the format was stale & there was too much competition, I would tend to disagree!

Given away with (the now defunct) Muzik Magazine in January 2003, great mix although a bit unsure about the MCing at times! Dunno what to think about the Audio Bullys, used to think they were great until they released that terrible ballard "I'm In Love" which put me off them, a shame really! Tom, the DJ half of the Bullys, had his decks at 16 and was a resident at London club Milk N' 2 Sugars when he was 17. "I went from house into hardcore and back into house again," recalls Tom. Tom has more recently been spotted devastating the dancefloor at the City Rockers club night in London, mixing The Kinks over Leftfield's 'Phat Planet'. "I play a lot of my own stuff now," explains the shy superstar DJ in waiting. "A bootleg of something here or there, house, hip hop. I'm not too worried about clinical production as long as it works."

Free with the October 2000 issue of Muzik Magazine, nice Rawkus Records showcase mixed by Shortee Blitz. Rawkus Records is an independent hip hop record label that enjoyed considerable exposure and massive success in the late '90s. Rawkus was established in 1996 by Brian Brater and Jarret Meyer, with financial backing from a school friend, James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch. Due to their connections to a source of money, Rawkus had the budget to advertise as well as the big hip hop labels. In 1999 it entered into a distribution deal with Interscope/Geffen, whose parent company was Universal Music.

Rawkus was responsible for bringing fame to many underground hip hop acts such as Sir Menelik; Company Flow; the High and Mighty; Mos Def and Talib Kweli (a duo known as Black Star), Pharoahe Monch, Skillz, and DJs and producers such as Hi Tek and DJ Evil Dee, as well as resurrecting Hip Hop legend Kool G Rap. They helped launch the conscious hip-hop movement through these artists and their influential compilations "The Lyricist Lounge" and "Soundbombing," which each had worldwide tours.

In 2002 Rawkus inked a joint venture deal MCA to take their underground sound mainstream, with their roster including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, The Roots, and Common. Soon after joining with MCA, MCA folded and Interscope/Geffen bought Rawkus and attempted to shift the focus from underground acts producing what they want to acts producing what Interscope/Geffen was accustomed to.

In January of 2004 it was reported that Geffen had opted not to renew their contract and that Rawkus Records was moving on from its initial acts, ending an era. In an interview with hip-hop news site AllHipHop.com, Hi Tek said, “They took chances and gave their life to underground hip-hop when no one else would. I really appreciate them. I think Rawkus was part of keeping real hip-hop music alive in its down times.”

In July of 2005 it was announced that Rawkus had re-emerged with a new distribution deal with RED Distribution, the independent distribution arm of the SonyBMG family, with releases planned for 2006. Indie/Dance Mix Tape

A mix tape (commonly the two words are stuck together as mixtape) is a home-made compilation of songs (typically copyrighted music taken from other sources) recorded in a specific order, traditionally onto a compact audio cassette.

With the advent of affordable, consumer-level digital audio, creating and distributing mixes in the form of a compact disc or MP3 playlist has become the contemporary method of choice, but the term mix tape is still commonly used, and will be used throughout this article to refer to mixes in different media (CD, MP3, MiniDisc, audio cassette, etc.).

A mix tape, which usually reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood, to a highly personal statement tailored to the tape's intended recipient. Essayist Geoffrey O'Brien has called the personal mix tape "the most widely practiced American art form," and many mix tape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement can be created that is greater than the sum of its individual songs, much as an album of pop music in the post-Beatles era can be considered as something more than a collection of singles.

So here's a selection of old indie/dance tunes from the beginning of the '90s, designed to be listened from the first to the last but in these wonderful technological times I suppose you don't even have to fast forward the ones you don't like, just delete them!

I suppose like loads of people in the UK, my musical taste was influenced by John Peel & I got into indie & dance music around the same time, loving all the obscure tunes he played. I hope that you like them to!

'80s Dance compilation "House Hits" (As seen on TV!) that I found at a carboot sale, the last side contains a mix of all the other tunes in it & some classic tunes at that! States the running time is exactly 10 minutes but plays for longer than that.

For 2,000 years, House was something people lived in. Now, in the unpredictable Eighties, it has become something to dance to. Beginning as a kind of kitchen extension onto dance music, House was a place everyone needed to visit, but only the most wacked-out, Chicago jack addicts wanted to stay. But these modest foundations have developed into a mighty mansion large enough to accomodate everything from the underground, trance dance traxs in the basement up to the top pop climbers in the attic.
Originally, House was run, inspired & promoted by Chicago DJ's. The scene was characterised by constant, competitive bickering & stealing. The only point of agreement was that House began at Frankie Knuckles club, The Wharehouse - hence the name.
The technique of making the music was simplicity in itself, an 808 drum machine for the relentless 4-on-the-floor bassdrum beat, an old seventies song like "I Can't Turn Around" by Issac Hayes restructured with piercing, stabbing vocals & a clattering kitchen sink percussion. Old Philly, Soul, Loleatta Holloway, any of the big Seventies disco hits underwent treatment that revamped, modernised & unleased them as churning dancefloor frenzy into an unsuspecting public. People who went out for a good time returned with a baaad habit.

In the UK, Morgan Khan made a developing genre of music financially accessible to an entire generation with his Streetsounds Electro series of compilation albums, ("Electro is aural sex!"). One of the biggest indie labels in the UK during the '80s, they helped break hundreds of Black Amercian hip-hop tunes in the UK through its compilations. I've found loads of Streetsounds in charity shops (except for the early Electro compilations which are like gold dust!). The label went bankrupt in the late 80s & closed down. But then it re-appeared in the late 90s to do a re-issue which never really took off. According to rumour, some German guys also bootlegged the first 8 of the Electro series. Back in 1999 Khan acquired the rights to the legendary Chicago tech-house label, Trax Records.
So, put your best foot backwards and retread the past, via some old friends...

The first mix here is the NY Side to the "New York vs LA Beats", classic Old Skool hip-hop tracks mixed together by Mastermind.

Free double mix CD given away when signing up for the Freeform Five website (this being one of them, coming with Pink & Blue CD labels), I couldn't stop listening to this CD when I received it throught the post! Loads of different styles mixed together, made me fall in love with Roxy Music! Saw Anu from Freeform Five play at Plug in Sheffield last year & kept hassling him to play Roxy Music (which he didn't & I apologise for my behaviour, sorry Anu!)

Freeform Five, the band, are confident that what they’ve made stands up as unique document of who they are and where they’ve all come from. Thought I'd better stick with the philosophy of Cover Mount Cassette & post up some of the "home made tracks", I haven't made any for a while but a couple of years ago I got into the mash-up/bootleg scene & decided to make some of my own, my 1st attempt was an hour long mix titled "Wallpaper" after the cut & paste method of making tunes of which I received praise & constructive criticism for, listening to it now some of it is a bit cheesy (although some of it was intended to be) & I started an attempt to edit out the bit I didn't like which has now been put on hold....
So here's a couple of other tunes I made back in 2004; "Birthday", which is a mash-up of The Beatles "Birthday", 50 Cent "In The Club", 50 Pence "In The Pub (acapella)", Stevie wonder "Happy Birthday" and the Team “On-Key” robotic mc’s!

Another bargain bin purchase on Shut Up & Dance Records,The Ragga Twins consist of Flinty Badman (Trevor Destouche) and Deman Rocker (David Destouche). Both were respected MC's starting of in a North London sound system called UNITY and formed The Ragga Twins in early 1990. I liked this one as it starts off with a nice reggae sample then the breaks kick in!

Disco Pogo For Punks In Pumps Vol. 2 given away with the December 2002 issue of Jockey Slut contains this fantastic song that I have rediscovered, the chorus is just fantastic! Lambchop is Nashville's most fucked-up country band. They aren't influenced by country music--they influence country music. Their music is even smoother than Del Reeves, and they have more musicians than Tanya Tucker's bathroom antics: two guitars, one bass, two drummers, pedal steel guitar, open-end wrenches, lacquer-thinner can, organ, xylophone, euphonium, trombone, baritone sax, trumpet, clarinet, bongoes, resonating metal square, and a vanilla extract bottle. Although they strive to be truly Nashville, they are virtually ignored in Nashville. In a town where every No. 1 single is recognized with a splashy Billboard overlooking the offices on Music Row, they labor quietly and diligently, waiting for the day when someone--Tony Brown, Aubrey Mayhew, Faith Hill--will return their phone calls or sexual advances. Given away with the March 2002 issue of Muzik, Groove Armada are not necessarily known for their mighty DJ'ing skills but for all the killer tunes they have made in the past (At the River, I See You Baby, Superstyling, etc). I think I saw them playing at Bed nightclub in Sheffield although did they step in for someone else or not turn up at all, damn my memory! Human Resource consisted of Guido Pernet, Johan Van Beek, Jasper Drexhage, Robert Mahu & Larenzo Nash (Yeah, me neither), & provide the tune that I need to wake me up, am working nights at the momnet & feel like i'm neither here nor there! Can't remember any other tune they did but they still seem to be on the go from this tune (website address is wannakissmyself.com!) Released in 1991 it is said by many that "Dominator" was the first record to use the "Hoover Sound"...although others claim Human Resource ripped off Joey Beltram...whatever the truth may be, what this track did do was it established the musical genre of "hardcore". Don't worry folks, there won't be any more "hardcore" tunes from this moment on!

'The best job I ever had' is how Jon Carter sums up his career to date. Born 30 years ago on the outskirts of London, Jon's rise to prominence was triggered, like so many of his generation, by the Acid House revolution of 88-89 when the warehouse parties that happened nationwide suddenly made music so much more accessible than ever before.
Excellent mix which I remember listening to whilst lying on the beach in Menorca, also remember seeing Jon at Creamfields a few years back with his wife at the time Sara Cox dancing around like a loon behind him! Free with the October 2003 issue of Mixmag.

Silver Bullet first hit the UK hip hop scene as part of Triple Element, who released a tune called 'What's Dat Sound' on Tam Tam records in 1988. After this, came, his debut as a solo artist 'Bring Forth The Guillotine' also on Tam Tam records, which was so successful that it prompted two other official remixes, one by Ben Chapman and the other by Norman Cook. '

After a two year gap and label switch from Tam Tam to Parlophone, Bullet released 'Undercover Anarchist' before releasing his debut and long awaited album 'Bring Down The Walls - No Limit Squad Returns' which was originally going to be called 'Hung, Drawn and Quartered'.

As well as featuring on many other artists records like Jonny L, Outcast (not THE Outkast), Monkey Mafia, Ben Chapman, to name a few, Silver Bullet relaunched himself as a solo artist onto the hip hop scene in 1998 as Silvah Bullet. Apparently, an album was recorded on Arthrob, but was never released.

Put this up for sale on ebay but nobody bought it, am glad in a way because I can't remember hearing this mix before, anyone who knows the album Never, Never, Land will recognise the riff from "An Eye For An Eye". The Bristol, England-based drum'n'bass project Breakbeat Era was spearheaded by acclaimed producer Roni Size in tandem with DJ Die (also Size's collaborator in Reprazent) and singer Leonie Laws.
